Over on one of the poker sites I visit, there’s a discussion topic about how much of a bankroll you need to play in $1/2 NL Hold’em games.
Some people are saying you need ten max buy ins, which in most casinos is $200 — some might go to $300 on the $1/2NL game. I personally say that if you’re playing “ABC Poker” (aka: “Rock”), then you’d be fine with $1000-1500 to play in that level.
I know that when I went to Tunica last December, I took around $1000 total with me, and ended up walking away with a decent profit after everything was said and done. Granted, the first few nights I was in town it looked bleak, but I had a good run my third night there and ended up taking home a tidy profit.
Your bankroll size doesn’t always depend on the level of game you want to play in, it also depends on the level of your play.

I’ve played in a lot of home games where it seems that check/raising is akin to kicking the host’s favorite pet. I’ve been called an a**hole more times than I care to count after I flop the nuts and check/call the flop and check/raise the turn.
People don’t understand that the magic of poker comes in deception, and hiding the strength of strong hands (the inverse also holds true). When you check/raise, you show a lot of strength. An indicator of “if you put more money into this pot, you’ll lose it” says a lot about an aggressive player.
However, in a lot of games where check/raising isn’t a dirty word, lots of people do it wrong. You shouldn’t, if ever, check/raise the flop. I’d say when you flop a set, on a board that doesn’t have a straight or flush draw, you check the flop, call a single bet, and then check/raise the turn. The only exception is in multiway pots where there’s a bet and a reraise on the flop. At this point, you should either raise to isolate or get out of the way (unless you hold top set!) — letting people draw against your made hand will lose you money in the long run. This is why even on the turn, check/raising isn’t always the best play. If the turn straightens up the board or puts a flush draw out there, you’re probably going to lose.

The Importance Of Pot Odds in Texas Holdem Pot odds are an intricate part of poker, whether it may be Texas Hold’em or any other poker variant, and the importance of knowing what it is and how to use it can’t be stressed enough. Simply put, pot odds lets you know if it is worth continue with a drawing hand in a pot, or not. So using pot odds should be a part of your Texas holdem strategy. Or you will end up paying more for draws than you can win and thus lose money in the long run. In this article we will exclusively deal with Texas Holdem odds. Basically it’s the relationship between the size of the pot, the number of winning cards (outs) you have and the cost to call. What you do is that you calculate the ratio between the size of the pot and the cost to call and compare that to the ratio of winning and loosing cards. For instance: lets say that there is $100 in the pot and you have a flush draw and it costs you $40 to call and see the turn. First you have to see how many outs you have. With two hearts on the board and two in your hand, you have a total of four hearts that are visible which means that there are 9 (13-4) hearts left in the card deck so you have 9 outs then. What you do next is that you take the number of cards left in the deck (47, this is the number of unseen cards and should contain all the cards that you haven’t seen, including cards that are dealt to others and burn cards) and subtract the number of outs you have 47-9= 36, and thus the ratio for losing versus winning cards are 36:9 which equals to 4:1 (there are 36 cards that can come that doesn’t give you the flush and 9 that does.) Next you calculate the ratio between the cost of calling (40) and the pot size (100) in the same way, 100:40 which equals 2.5:1. Finally you compare these numbers 4:1 and 2.5:1 and if the cost ratio of calling is higher than the number of outs ratio you call. In our example the ratio is lower and thus you shouldn’t call. To be economically viable the cost ratio should have at least been the same as the outs ratio. If you need to calculate the odds for both turn and river cards (if for instance your opponent went allin with that $40 bet and you get to see both the turn and the river card for a total of $40) you simply add the number of outs for the turn and the river. Applied to the example above it would look like this (36:9 + 35:9 = 71:18, which roughly is 4:2). As you can see you unfortunately still don’t have the correct odds to call. Pot odds are very important, especially in fixed limit where every bet won or lost makes a big difference in your earnings.

This category of casinos is very important to the growth of online wagering and number of players that consider online gaming as a game of skill and not gambling. Poker has shown a phenomenal growth in the last few years. The online cash games and tournaments have been helped by all of the poker play that is now shown on TV. The synergism that has been present has aided in this great increase in the popularity of poker throughout the world. Poker casinos offer their players the games they want to play at limits they are comfortable with. These online casinos also offer numerous tournaments for sizeable amounts of prize money and also entries into some of the biggest live tournaments like the WPT, the growing number of European tournaments and the WSOP. The other advantage that online poker casinos offer their players is the fact that there are games going on 24/7 and a player can play when they want too and usually not have to wait to play. One factor that poker players will immediately see online is the lack of being able to read tells on other player’s faces. But the game is still played the same way and the common mistakes like playing out of turn are eliminated as online this is not possible to do. The games have the same rules, buy-ins, play and the percentages stay the same. The Internet and poker seem to be made for each other. Poker casinos have grown quickly and choosing where to play is a matter of player count, games or limits offered and the number of tournaments a week. The very popular sites in this category of casinos meet all of these requirements. The large number of players that they have online at any time, mean that the games stay full and do not break up easily. Player count is a very important factor in choosing any poker casino. Games and limits is another selection factor after the player count is satisfied. Online rating sites are useful in gathering sites that should be looked at for potential play. One thing to remember when playing online is the skill levels are all over the place, but many of the players are very good players so watch yourself and your play in any game you choose.
